The Business Secretary – Peter Kyle Speaks at the CBI

Peter Kyle has spoken to Business Leaders at the CBI – Confederation of British Industry conference in Westminster.

He stated that the number one mission of this Government is, and remains economic growth. He went on to say “my priority in this job is to break down the barriers to business growth, to create the right conditions for you to do what you do best, creating wealth and opportunity.”

I fail to see any evidence of this having been prioritised over the last 12 months and feel little assurance that it will be given any priority over the next 12.

Herein lies one of the biggest challenges facing modern Britain. Our small and medium business community accounts for most of our GDP, employs most of our workforce and truly is the backbone of the British economy. What was said there is exactly what we need however, it just ain’t happening.

He added that “real growth comes from enterprise and wealth creation” and that “it’s only by talking to you and listening to you and learning from you that I can understand what it is that you need from me.” Perhaps because he and his front bench colleagues have no real life experience of working in the private sector.

What followed was clear indication that these are just words as there was no suggestion as to how any of this might be achieved.

We are all agreed that it’s time for change, time to to reduce the pressures applied to our small businesses, ease the tax burden and make growth and employment an appealing reality.
